Welcome to Whittier Alaska, The Entire Town Lives in 1 Building
Whittier Alaska, is a popular tourist destination in the summer time, with frequent stops from Alaskan Cruise lines. But in winter time only the 200 local residents remain and the only way to get into town is through a railway tunnel through the Maynard Mountain.
Several decades ago the entire town decided to move into the Belich Towers, a 14 story former miliary building. In the building, the town has a church, offices, groceries and a tunnel to the school for year round access.
In the PBS video we get to see what life is like in Whittier for one school teacher, with all her students also being her neighbors.
