75 days of Green Energy. Costa Rica has used only clean energy in 2015
Costa Rica has set a new precedence for clean energy, currently they have exceeded 75 days in a row using 100% renewable energy to power the entire country. No fossil fuel have been used to generate electricity in the country since the end of 2014, thanks to heavier than average rainfall powering 4 hydroelectric facilities.
In 2014 80% of Costa Rica was powered by hydroelectric, and the country is on pace to be 100% renewable power by 2021. Even with this Costa Rica doesn’t want to place all their power needs in hydro power, the Latin nation is currently building 3 large geothermal plants to take advantage of the vast clean energy available. Diversifying to geo thermal will give Costa Rica more stability with renewable energy, since hydro power is heavily relate and weather changes and can see significant impacts from any seasonal droughts.
